My primary approach to counseling is an integration of Person-Centered and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). This collaboration allows me to treat each client as individually as possible within a genuine and empathic relationship, but also work in a directive and action-oriented manner. As a certified personal trainer, I offer session options that combine the beneficial effects of physical activity on an individual's mood and quality of life as a stand-alone intervention or in conjunction with talk therapy. For adults looking to integrate faith principles as a source for strength, I can offer faith-based support in session as well. I am also available to speak or present to your church or ministry about mental health and wellness issues in collaboration with faith.
I am currently offering virtual counseling sessions via HIPAA-compliant platforms for adults who are looking to experience healing, growth, and support from the safety and comfort of your own home.
A version of Walk-and-Talk therapy, named after my mother, Marian Brickhouse. Walk-and-Talk is a form of counseling or consultation while walking outdoors in public places (subject to location and weather conditions). I offer walk-and-talk sessions as an optional treatment modality, keeping in mind the recommended social distancing procedures by the CDC. Some clients enjoy the experience of movement while talking or feel more comfortable talking side-by-side, rather than sitting face-to-face in an office or in front of a computer screen.
Regular exercise has been noted to improve and maintain the quality and vitality of a person's life, while reducing the risk of injury and preventing the onset of certain diseases. It can aid in sleep and weight management, decrease risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Exercise offers mood-altering effects which could include an increase in self-esteem and a decrease in anxiety. By incorporating exercise in my interventions, I offer clients a way to express themselves by engaging in a creative and healthy release, as well as a way to pour back into their wellness through self-care.
I am most passionate about providing individuals a way to receive support after the death of a loved one beyond the funeral or homegoing service. Individuals looking for group support in their grief experience can register to join a low-cost program I lead for The Prophetic Church of Christ, called GriefShare. It is a Christ-centered, video-based ministry that helps individuals grieving the death of a family member or friend. This 13-week program is designed to reach people inside and outside the host church, even non-Christians.
